Here's Don's original and authentic definition of REAL Wellness:
'Real Wellness, a deliberate mindset or philosophy inspired by reason, exuberance and liberty. The purpose of wellness is to achieve, maintain and fine-tune a high quality of life.'
So there you have it, REAL Wellness; real, not imaginary, the genuine article.
Wellness is not a treatment. It's not something you do to someone. It's not something that can be injected, sniffed or poured down someone's throat. It can't be rubbed on or pushed back into place. It doesn't get better when you heat it or cool it. You can't cut it out or poultice it. It's not something you do after something happened to someone.
It's a way of being - and you're either being it or you're not. It's the same with organisations; they're either wellness organisations or they're not. Either way it shows.
When you listen to Don Ardell you'll be in the presence of a man who lives and breathes wellness.
At a tad over 70 Don is a world-class athlete in his age-group. He is an All-American triathlete and duathlete, and is in Australia to compete in the World Masters Triathalon on the Gold Coast.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH FITNESS AND WELLBEING
|
The second half of the morning session will be presented by Canberra-based physical educator, John Miller.
He'll be talking about developing an organisational wellness culture from his perspective, one that goes beyond measuring blood pressure and cholesterol.
John will present the case for inspiring and motivating staff to keep themselves fit and healthy to the best of their ability. (Staff feel better, the organisation feel better - and saves money.) |
John Miller |
He will present the results of his audit report research and case-studies illustrating both best and worst practice in OHF&W, and what organisations need to focus on when it comes to promoting health, fitness and wellbeing in the workplace.
There is an epidemic of body system dysfunction in our community and in organisations it shows up as elevated levels of absenteeism, presenteeism, workers compensation and employee turnover.
The cost to organisations can be horrific.
Some of the personally-generated dysfunctions are dressed up as work-related injuries - that's when it becomes really expensive and complicated. It shows up as job dissatisfaction, as people who are tired and stressed.
John will talk about what a good occupational health, fitness and wellbeing program looks like, how you can implement one, how you can audit current status and monitor effectiveness.
The session will be interactive and participants will receive feedback about their own health, fitness, wellbeing, stress and career satisfaction.
THE CROOKBACK CLINIC
The afternoon session is designed to provide managers and OH&S program directors with insight into the cause and treatment of the common musculo-skeletal dysfunctions.
Over 50% of people report some musculo-skeletal dysfunction. Some are teetering on the edge of a herniated disk - which, if it is triggered by a work incident will 100% of the blame on the organisation and obligate them to paying 100% of the cost of restoring poor function to good.
John will point out how to identify and manage risk - and avoid some of the swifties people in poor condition are likely to play on their employer.
The session will be interactive and people who come will be taught how to diagnose the cause of the common musculo-skeletal dysfunctions. They'll come away with a good idea of which exercises are essential if poor function is to be restored to good.
More particularly OH&S managers will be given tools to measure the risk facing their organisation and lower that risk.
This is an interactive session and participants are asked to wear comfortable trousers - no frocks.
