CORPORATE WELLNESS SEMINAR

Thursday 17th September

Southern Cross Club, Woden.

9am - 12.30pm

REAL Wellness in the workplace

1.30pm - 3.30pm

the CrookBack Clinic

REAL WELLNESS IN THE WORKPLACE

The keynote speaker in the first half of the morning  session is Donald Ardell, one of the most highly respected wellness authorities in North America.

In 1977, Florida-based Don Ardell wrote the best selling book,  High Level Wellness: An Alternative to Doctors, Drugs, and Disease.

The success of the book helped spark the wellness movement and propel Don to a career of writing, speaking and teaching ways to apply wellness concepts personally and professionally.

Like Johnnie Walker he's still going strong and recently celebrated the 500th edition of his wellness newsletter.

Don Ardell

Here's Don's original and authentic definition of REAL Wellness:

'Real Wellness, a deliberate mindset or philosophy inspired by reason, exuberance and liberty. The purpose of wellness is to achieve, maintain and fine-tune a high quality of life.'

So there you have it, REAL Wellness; real, not imaginary, the genuine article.

Wellness is not a treatment. It's not something you do to someone. It's not something that can be injected, sniffed or poured down someone's throat. It can't be rubbed on or pushed back into place. It doesn't get better when you heat it or cool it. You can't cut it out or poultice it. It's not something you do after something happened to someone.

It's a way of being - and you're either being it or you're not. It's the same with organisations; they're either wellness organisations or they're not. Either way it shows.

When you listen to Don Ardell you'll be in the presence of a man who lives and breathes wellness.

At a tad over 70 Don is a world-class athlete in his age-group. He is an All-American triathlete and duathlete, and is in Australia to compete in the World Masters Triathalon on the Gold Coast.

He was Associate Professor at the University of Central Florida where he was founder and Director of that university's Campus Wellness Center and its Wellness Institute. Since 1984 he has been the publisher of The Ardell Wellness Report as well as a weekly electronic newsletter.

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH FITNESS AND WELLBEING

The second half of the morning session will be presented by Canberra-based physical educator, John Miller.

He'll be talking about developing an organisational wellness culture from his perspective, one that goes beyond measuring blood pressure and cholesterol.

John will present the case for inspiring and motivating staff to keep themselves fit and healthy to the best of their ability. (Staff feel better, the organisation feel better - and saves money.)

John Miller

He will present the results of his audit report research and case-studies illustrating both best and worst practice in OHF&W, and what organisations need to focus on when it comes to promoting health, fitness and wellbeing in the workplace.

There is an epidemic of body system dysfunction in our community and in  organisations it shows up as elevated levels of absenteeism, presenteeism, workers compensation and employee turnover.

The cost to organisations can be horrific.

Some of the personally-generated dysfunctions are dressed up as work-related injuries - that's when it becomes really expensive and complicated. It shows up as job dissatisfaction, as people who are tired and stressed.

John will talk about what a good occupational health, fitness and wellbeing program looks like, how you can implement one, how you can audit current status and monitor effectiveness.

The session will be interactive and participants will receive feedback about their own health, fitness, wellbeing, stress and career satisfaction.

THE CROOKBACK CLINIC

The afternoon session is designed to provide managers and OH&S program directors with insight into the cause and treatment of the common musculo-skeletal dysfunctions.

Over 50% of people report some musculo-skeletal dysfunction. Some are teetering on the edge of a herniated disk - which, if it is triggered by a work incident will  100% of the blame on the organisation and obligate them to paying 100% of the cost of restoring poor function to good.

John will point out how to identify and manage risk - and avoid some of the swifties people in poor condition are likely to play on their employer.

The session will be interactive and people who come will be taught how to diagnose the cause of the common musculo-skeletal dysfunctions. They'll come away with a good idea of which exercises are essential if poor function is to be restored to good.

More particularly OH&S managers will be given tools to measure the risk facing their organisation and lower that risk.

This is an interactive session and participants are asked to wear comfortable trousers - no frocks.

SEMINAR FEE

The seminar(s) come with the compliments of Miller Health.

LUNCH

Lunch will be at participants' expense. You may choose to dine in at the Southern Cross Health Club's dining room or in the Woden Shopping Centre.

Regards

John Miller

- 2 hours

A seminar for people who want to protect themselves from musculo-skeletal dysfunction and/or restore poor function to good function.

Join John Miller for this 2 hour seminar on preventing and fixing musculo-skeletal dysfunction.

The CrookBack Clinic is essential for people who want to improve their musculo-skeletal status. It is a must for people with crook backs, stiff necks, frozen shoulders and sore arms

By attending this seminar you will learn

what are the main causes of back, neck, shoulder and arm dysfunction, in particular RSI and the inappropriately named OOS

how to make the distinction between an injury and a dysfunction - this will impact on who you're going to blame!

the two main principles underscoring successful musculo-skeletal rehab

how to measure the risk of getting a crook back, stiff neck, sore shoulders and painful arms

how to protect and/or rehabilitate yourself from back and neck dysfunction using the CrookBack conditioning program

how Formula One Rehabilitation speeds up the rehabilitation process

how to protect yourself with a good ergonomic set-up at work and at home

which foods and supplements you need to eat more of and which foods you need to steer clear of

why the rub down, crunch, hot wheat bag, electric shock and a Celebrex tablet are unsatisfactory treatments

that taking pain-killing and anti-inflammatory tablets which mask the symptoms of dysfunction are poor substitutes for the exercises you need to do to get yourself back into alignment

how to detect whether the treatment you've been prescribed is the right treatment

how posture affects how you feel and vice versa

MOST IMPORTANTLY, you'll learn some of the key exercises you need to do on a regular and systematic basis to get yourself back in alignment. Do that and you'll feel better.

In the post junk-medical age it's 'patient heal thyself'. By the end of the seminar you'll be in a good position to know what to do to get yourself back into good shape. You don't need a PhD in rocket, medical or pharmaceutical science. There's no smoke, no mirrors; no lotions, potions, pills or powders; no syrups, strappings or surgery; no crunches, rub downs or electric shocks; no money - just you finding a bit of time each week to do the exercises which will get your body back into alignment.

You'll be glad you came.

You'll receive an interactive work book.

Bring your reading glasses and a pen. Wear slacks. (Don't wear jeans and don't even think of coming in a frock.)
