PURPOSE
We recognise our legal and social
responsibility to provide staff with a healthy workplace, and to
encourage staff to keep themselves fit and healthy to the best of their
ability.
There are
three principal beneficiaries of the successful implementation of this
policy:
1. |
our Staff,
who when they are fit and healthy experience feelings of
wellbeing, are pain free, have more energy, vitality and
enthusiasm, are more productive and have less absences.
2. |
our Organisation,
which benefits from the workplace atmosphere generated by fit
and healthy people, from increased productivity, and lower costs
associated with absenteeism, presenteeism, workers’ compensation
and staff turnover. |
3. |
our Stake holders,
including our shareholders and the organisations that rely on
us. Our aim is to be an exemplary model for other employers in
WorkHealth, fitness and wellbeing (WHFW). |
We
believe an increased emphasis on workplace health, fitness and wellbeing
is one way our organisation can contribute to elevating standards of
health, fitness and wellbeing within the community.
In our
own workplace we view our WHFW policy as an important employee value
proposition.
HEALTH, FITNESS AND WELLBEING
We
believe that in a sedentary culture it is a big ask for anyone to stay
healthy without being physically fit. We believe the dramatic increase
in the incidents of metabolic, musculo-skeletal and psychological
dysfunction is driven, in significant measure, by a lack of physical
fitness, along with a poor diet and an inability to manage the stresses
of work and life.
Our
workplace health, fitness and wellbeing strategy and its attendant
programs is designed to support people in their own efforts to keep
themselves fit and healthy.
Our WHFW policy is driven by the commitment of the Chief Executive and
management.
Our WHFW
objectives are:
ˇ |
to
proactively target known sources of metabolic, musculo-skeletal
and psychological dysfunction and prevent those that are
exacerbated by work practices. |
ˇ |
to
provide adequate resources to maintain an effective WHFW program |
ˇ |
to ensure
all employees are instructed
and trained in WHFW procedures, known hazards and controls |
ˇ |
to
develop and make staff aware of minimum acceptable levels of
WHFW |
ˇ |
to
consult with employees on WHFW issues both directly and through
WHFW Representatives and the WHFW and Safety Committees; and
ˇ |
to
monitor research in WHFW and apply recommendations. |
We require our managers
and supervisors to:
ˇ |
be
actively involved in, responsible and accountable for
maintaining a fit and health workplace |
ˇ |
implement health and fitness policies and
procedures |
ˇ |
provide adequate and competent supervision with
regard to employees' health, fitness and wellbeing |
ˇ |
be
responsible for
initiating the appointment of OHFW representatives in their work
areas |
ˇ |
undertake training to ensure a knowledge of their
obligations and responsibilities with regard to WHFW |
ˇ |
ensure WHFW representatives and employees are
consulted in relation to any matter that may affect health,
fitness and wellbeing. |
Our
employees are
required to:
ˇ |
observe WHFW procedures |
ˇ |
take reasonable care for their own health,
fitness and wellbeing and that of fellow workers; and co-operate
with management in achieving a fit and healthy workplace. |
This
policy will be implemented through health, fitness and wellbeing systems
and programs that will continually be monitored, reviewed and upgraded
to improve standards, awareness and performance. All management and
staff are expected to work cooperatively to effectively implement this
policy.
